Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
